Program Information
The Youth Health Service Corps is a health careers recruitment program that engages diverse high school students as leaders in meaningful community service learning that addresses community health issues. Student volunteers are trained using a six module curriculum that prepares them to serve in health care settings that serve the underserved. Once prepared, students choose independent service or group service learning projects to participate in. The YHSC-AmeriCorps Division is a new and innovative approach that is designed to build support systems for at-risk students that function within the family, school and neighborhood. The YHSC-AmeriCorps Division will combine participation in service learning projects with support services, including group mentoring, individualized attention to academic achievement and family support. Students will be exposed to entry level health care careers and learn how to successfully enter onto upwardly mobile health care career ladders. The program will increase AmeriCorps members' educational and professional status by providing opportunities that integrate best practice models into service learning and group mentoring models.
Member Duties
AmeriCorps members will be placed with specific high schools in Willimantic, Waterbury, Bridgeport and Hartford. Each AmeriCorps member will work with a group of 10 to 15 students and closely with school personnel to identify appropriate youth who are willing to join the program. AmeriCorps members will instruct students in the YHSC curriculum to prepare them for cooperative, problem-solving activities and guide them through service learning projects that address community health needs. AmeriCorps members will meet with their students on a regular basis and will guide them through the service learning model. Students will also be provided with an array of support services including group mentoring, individualized attention to academic achievement and family support. In conjunction with school guidance counselors, AmeriCorps members will design interventions that improve students' pro-social behavior and problem solving and conflict management skills.
