YHSC PROGRAM COMPONENTS

The YHSC Program is composed of several components that together make the YHSC a powerful national program being utilized by AHECs across the United States.

The YHSC Program Components:
•   YHSC Curriculum Guide
•   YHSC Service Learning Project Guide
•   AHEC Nation Online Database (annual fee applies)
•   National Program Assessment

YHSC Curriculum Guide

YHSC uses a six module curriculum to prepare students for volunteer service. Each module has corresponding PowerPoint presentation for facilitator use and hands-on activities with handouts. The YHSC Curriculum Guide is aligned with the National Health Care Skill Standards and guides facilitators in instructional methods to assure quality outcomes for students.

  • Module 1. Leadership and Service Learning
  • Module 2. AHEC Nation Database
  • Module 3. Vulnerable Populations & Cultural Competency
  • Module 4. Legal and Ethical Issues
  • Module 5. Health Career Exploration
  • Module 6. Health Care Skills: Universal Precautions, Health Observation, Data Collection, Vital Signs

YHSC Service Learning Project Guide

YHSC members commit to completing at least 50 hours of service. YHSC members can choose to do independent service or service learning projects.

Independent service requires placement by the YHSC coordinator in a partner community health care agency. The YHSC Agency Orientation Toolkit is aligned with the 40 Developmental Assets and is designed to be used with supervisors and mentors at independent service sites to assure quality outcomes for students.

Service learning projects are guided by YHSC facilitators over a semester. Students may choose one of three YHSC project topics: Childhood Obesity Prevention; Oral Health Education or Health & Social Issues of the Aging Populations. Experienced YHSC coordinators may also create unique service learning projects to implement with students.

The YHSC Service Learning Project Guide is aligned with the K-12 Service Learning Standards for Quality Practice and guides facilitators in the service learning process to assure quality outcomes for students.
